When to Replace Your Trailer Springs

Trailer springs take a beating - especially if you're hauling heavy loads, navigating off-road conditions, or towing in wet, salty environments. Over time, even the best spring kits will wear out. But how do you know when it's time to replace them?

  1. Visible corrosion or flaking
Surface rust is normal, but heavy flaking, deep pitting, or separation between leaves signals serious deterioration. If you see cracks or chunks missing from the spring pack, it's time to replace them.

  2. Trailer is sagging or uneven
If your trailer no longer rides level when loaded - or leans to one side - your springs may be fatigued or broken. This impacts stability, braking, and tyre wear.

  3. Unusual noise or rattling
Loose, worn, or deformed springs may cause clunking or rattling noises, especially when braking or hitting bumps. This often means the leaf springs are no longer held tightly in the hangers or slipper brackets.

  4. Frequent bottoming out
If your trailer bottoms out over speed bumps or on gravel tracks, your springs aren't doing their job. You may need to upgrade to a higher-rated spring kit or replace fatigued components.

  5. Uneven tyre wear
Sagging or unbalanced suspension can cause tyres to wear unevenly. This is often a result of spring compression loss or misalignment due to ageing hardware.

Don't forget the hardware
When replacing your spring set, always inspect or replace the U-bolts, hangers, and mounting plates. Treadway's trailer spring kits make this easy with complete kits that match your axle and trailer rating.

If in doubt, give your trailer a full inspection or contact our team for help identifying the right replacement spring set.
