Choosing the right trailer spring kit is essential to building a trailer that performs reliably and safely for your specific load and usage.
Start with the load rating
Spring kits are classified by their maximum load or GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass). A single axle trailer rated to 1250kg, for example, should be paired with a 1250kg spring set. For tandem trailers, you'll need to double that capacity, e.g., two 1500kg spring kits for a 3000kg GVM.
Know your axle dimensions
In New Zealand, 50mm round axles are the most common standard. Make sure the spring set you choose suits this diameter or the size of your specific axle. Some spring sets also include U-bolts and plates that are matched to axle dimensions.
Choose the right style of spring
Most Treadway spring kits use slipper-style leaf springs. These are ideal for light commercial and agricultural trailers. For smoother ride quality or more complex suspension setups, eye-eye springs or torsion axles might be a better fit.
Look for features that improve performance
Treadway spring kits include features like anti-rattle leaf ends and extended second leaves that reduce stress on the main spring. Some use progressive compression designs, which deliver a softer ride under light load and firm support when the trailer is full.
Single vs Tandem axle kits
If you're building a tandem axle trailer, be sure to select kits specifically designed for that use. Tandem axle trailer spring kits include additional equaliser hangers and hardware to distribute weight across both axles.
What else do you need?
Trailer spring kits often pair with axle fabrication services and trailer brake kits. Make sure you're building the full picture for your trailer setup.
