Torsion axles provide a smoother, quieter ride due to their internal rubber suspension system, which absorbs shock and reduces vibration. They offer independent wheel movement, are low-maintenance, and compact—making them ideal for lightweight trailers where ride comfort and simplicity are priorities.
Torsion axles use rubber cords encased in a steel housing to provide suspension. As the wheel travels over bumps, the axle’s internal square shaft twists inside the rubber, absorbing energy and cushioning the ride. Each wheel acts independently, improving handling and stability.
Torsion axles are well suited for small to medium-duty trailers where a compact design, low maintenance, and a smooth ride are important. Common applications include marine trailers, custom-built trailers, enclosed cargo trailers, and compact utility trailers. They are especially popular where weight savings and ride quality matter most.
You would choose a torsion axle when space is limited, ride comfort is a priority, and minimal maintenance is desired. Torsion axles are ideal for lightweight and marine trailers. Leaf springs are better suited to heavier-duty or off-road use where load distribution and ground clearance are more important.
Yes. The galvanised finish helps protect the axle from corrosion, making it well-suited for marine and coastal environments where exposure to water and salt is common.
Torsion axles have an enclosed suspension system with rubber cords that allow each wheel to move independently, resulting in a smoother ride and reduced vibration. They are low-maintenance and more compact. Leaf spring systems use layered steel springs connected across the axle, offering a rugged, load-sharing setup that’s well suited to heavy-duty or off-road use. Each system has its strengths depending on the trailer’s weight, use, and environment.
Torsion axles are virtually maintenance-free. Unlike leaf springs, they have no exposed moving parts or metal-on-metal wear points. The main maintenance task is periodic lubrication of the wheel bearings, as with any axle system.
Yes. Quality torsion axles, such as those made by Knott, are designed to perform reliably across a wide temperature range. However, in extremely cold conditions, the rubber suspension may stiffen slightly, which can affect ride feel but not function.
